Templar is a graphic novel written by Jordan Mechner and Illustrated by LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland. I got this for Christmas from my girlfriend, and have been slowly reading it since. I have been savouring this wonderful book willing it to never end but, to my woe, it has. Now while this book is a Graphic novel I would say that it is the depth of story which makes this recommendable rather than the art in itself. Now that is not to say that the illustrations are inferior, in fact quite the contrary; however the style is not unique in any way to my mind. The story is another matter! The historical research behind this novel is evident, from dates and names to locations of infamous doings. As a bit of a Templar nut since playing the Assassin’s Creed game series I really loved having the nods to things that are in those games as well as relating the behaviour of some of the characters to things we know about the order.
All this said even if you do’t give two flying ___ about the accuracy of the portrayals etc this is a compelling story with sufficient humour and seriousness to even manage to pull at the heart strings every once in a while. I really recommend trying to get a hold of this and giving it a go. If you have never read a graphic novel before this would be a nice starter for you as the clean art style is highly accessible; and the story is not overly fantastical as the more hardcore Graphics tend to be.
